When you’re fairly new to lettering or bullet journaling and want to learn how to use brush pens, I think it’s important not to work with pens that are too expensive, because it can kind of hold you back. You’re so afraid of breaking the Pen, and before you get the right technique, there’s no doubt that one or two brush tips will be a little messed up. That’s just as it should be. And that’s why it’s so fun to be able to show that just because you don’t spend a lot of money on a single brush pen, you can still work with lots of beautiful colors, and also practice on two different brush tips, because Staedtler Double-Ended Watercolour Brush Pens are so crazy affordable.

Here you have a total of 36 double-tipped Pens (actually 72 different brush pens, OMG!) at a very affordable price and with lots of possibilities. The paint is water-based and can therefore be diluted with water, or mixed with other Pen colors. The large brush tip is sturdy, the same size as, say, the Edding 1340 Brush Pen but a little smaller than the Karin Brushmarker, if that tells you anything (and if it doesn’t, don’t worry, you’ll get there eventually). The small tip is hard and incredibly sturdy, which means it can withstand any abuse you might throw at it. This means that the dynamics are not so great, i.e. there is not so much difference between the narrowest and widest line that it can achieve, but it also makes it an excellent teacher. The size is smaller than the Pentel Brush Sign, more in the style of Pilot Fude-Makase.

Since the large tip is made of felt, it will wear faster than the small one, you can count on that, which you will notice that it will be more difficult to get the narrower line with the large brush tip after a while. This happens to all brush pens sooner or later, and maybe a little faster for felt tips, but it is delayed if you work on smooth and fine paper, such as smooth or coated. And here’s where the price comes in: there are other pens with similar nibs that are just as vulnerable but significantly more expensive (that’s one of the reasons I don’t sell them), and then you might wonder if it’s a good buy. But Staedtler Double-Ended Watercolor Brush Pens are so affordable that I wholeheartedly recommend them, which, by the way, is the common theme for all products in this shop.

In other words: If you like colors and want to learn brush lettering or to work with watercolor/watercolor techniques, I think you should go for these.

Staedtler Double-Ended Watercolor Brush Pens are also sold in an 18-pack.
