Say hello to Zebra brush pens! The best lettering pens in the world are made in Japan, and now there are four new acquaintances in the shop.

About the Pen

Zebra WFT5 has two nibs, medium and fine. The difference in the size of the tips is pretty big when you look but not quite as big when you use the Pen. There is a slightly different feel in them, the medium tip has a magically nice inertia I think. The small tip is more reminiscent of the feeling of Pentel Brush Sign, or perhaps above all UniPin Fine Line Brush. You should really try this Pen, especially together with coated paper. It’s a combo made in heaven, I promise.

The medium point can also create fantastic texture in its lines if you are a little quick on the hand, that is, where the color does not become completely opaque, but creates lines with some narrow voids in them. I love it, but if you don’t like it, it’s just a matter of writing a little slower, or using the Pen on coated paper where the color doesn’t get absorbed by the paper fibers but dries on top and thus flows out and becomes smoother.

Japanese quality

Zebra’s brush pens feel very REAL, not like some somewhat hastily produced pens that some companies create just because they realized that they can make money selling brush pens, which often gives a slightly plastic result with a quality that is not up to par. These “fast-produced” pens can certainly be great first pens because they are often cheaper and available in many different colors, which of course attracts many, think text Bic Intensity or Staedtler double-ended water color brush pens. With Zebra’s Pens, it’s just the opposite. There is FEELING, reverence for the craft and an uncompromising attitude that I like very much. Everyone must have at least one Zebra pen if you ask me.

Color

WFT5 has waterproof and archival paint, just like UniPin Fine Line Brush. It’s often described as “deep black”, but I’m a little conflicted. I think the color is a little softer black, a little softer than others, which is very appealing.

As with all brush pens, you can determine how wide the lines the Pen creates by varying how hard you press it against the paper. Use really good paper to make the felt tips hold their shape for as long as possible.

The WF zebra series is available in three additional variants:

  • Blue (WFSS4): Extra Fine
  • Gray (WF1): Fine
  • Black (WF3): Medium
