Pentel Rollerball

Let me introduce you to the Pentel Rollerball, a green and charming outsider in here among all the posha brush pens.

Look, Pens are important, we all know that. But they can be important for different reasons. A lettering pen, such as a fineliner, should have a reasonably slow tip, because if it’s too fast, it’s hopelessly difficult to set the details and the flow of ink becomes a little uneven. Anyone who has been to my workshops knows that I talk about drawing low and slow for there to be a chance of it turning out well, and so the Pen should be accordingly.

But. When it comes to handwriting, writing notes to the family, shopping list to the grocery store or, as I do, planning and diary every day, then you do NOT want a dull and slow Pen. Then I write fast as hell to get all the thoughts out of my head before I forget them (and believe me, there are MANY) so then I need a little rocket for a Pen. If it’s too slow, my hand hurts so badly, and I get kind of stressed that I can’t keep up. And then, dear friends, just like with all other pens and papers, I have done my research properly. Believe me when I say that there are many pens that have been purchased, tested and rejected. I’ve done the heavy lifting for you, plain and simple.

The result is this little green thing. You’ll recognize it, it’s an oldie but a goodie – the oldest rollerball pen, even, according to Pentel. And yes, it may look a bit plasticky but it’s made from 75% recycled material, just so you know. It is also said that Queen Elizabeth II herself wrote with this but what do I know.

Either way, you have my favorite pen here. It’s useless for lettering but great for just about everything else.
